Tip: Turn off your monitor and don't keep your system on

Suggested by Michael Vella.

Most people think that it is best to leave a computer on rather than turn it on and off because of power surges. This is a myth. Leaving a computer on for 24 hours means that it'll use more power than an energy-efficient refrigerator? 50% of power is used by the monitor.

Set up a company-wide policy to switch off the monitors of idling workstations and get everyone to shut down their systems before they leave. IF they can't shut them down then at least put them in sleep mode. This stops the HDD from spinning and turns of some other components which will make the computer use less energy.
