Although compact fluorescent light bulbs save more energy they still have the potential to pollute if they are not disposed of properly. CFLs contain small amounts of mercury which, if disposed of in your regular waste, will leak into the ground. Check with your local hardware store about disposal.
If a CFL breaks, leave the area immediately. Inhaling mercury is poisonous. Wait for 15 minutes for any particles to settle. Cover you mouth and nose when you sweep up.
