GreenAroundYou.org is a nonprofit organization to make it easier for people to practice, promote, and fund earth-friendly activities. While many people live as sustainably as they can, within the constraints of modern living, there are still many activities that we all have no control over. People can't necessarily control 100% of the factors in their own lives, such as needing to fly, or using electricity from the grid for lights, computers, and the like. Moreover, people who want to live sustainably have no control over the people who don't, yet are impacted by them. GreenAroundYou was designed to address both areas, by taking in contributions and directing them in the most efficient ways, and by sharing information to educate others.
GreenAroundYou, Inc., is a Colorado nonprofit corporation. GreenAroundYou is completely independent; it is not associated with any government or business entity, and receives 100% of its funding from the general public.
Green Credits are a convenient unit of measuring sustainable activities. Green Credits can be applied to a variety of activities, such as carbon offset credits or research grants.
The initial dollar conversion value chosen reflects the approximate cost of carbon offset credits for one ton of CO2. (Thus, for example, according to Eco Business Links, driving 12,000 miles in a mid-size, 30mpg car will generate approximately 3.5 tons of CO2, meaning it would take around 3.5 Green Credits to offset.) This price will likely rise over time based on normal market mechanisms of supply and demand.
Another reason to count Green Credits is to make people comfortable giving them as gifts, where people may feel apprehensive about a certificate listing a specific dollar amount. Green Credits add a little bit of mystery.
This little bit of mystery is also intended to advance the cause: Green Credits make a convenient way to display or make gifts of certificates showing that you Greened Around You in a way that generates conversation -- "Okay, Pat, what are the 'Green Credits' on that certificate?" -- which in turn promotes discussion and education on sustainability.

We started to answer that here, but the list got too long, so we made a separate page just to explain what's unique about GreenAroundYou.
